1.10 Lanna Mural Painting
Lanna
mural paintings have the long history and continual development from time to
time that have emerged various artist families. For example, Chiang Mai artist
family, Tai Yai artist family and Tai Lue artist family. They create their own
identity and idealistic appearance that arises from their religious faith and
belief. In this sense, Lanna mural painting functions as a recorder of
environment, social context of Lanna community, thoughts, belief, tradition,
history as well as a spiritual link of social morality and virtue. Hence, Lanna
mural paintings are considered as
the cultural heritage passing on from
generation to generation that is worth for study, conservation, formulation and
development at the same time so that this national treasure will not disappear.
Mural painting is called in Lanna language as “Hoop Tam” which reflects the sophisticated and
distinctive craftsmanship. It can be recognized as one of the most important
and interesting craft arts because its creativity did not only respond to the
conditions of Lanna community existence, but also identify community’s belief
and principle, techniques, methods all the way to the thoughts, communication
and relationship with other communities and cultures. Their historical and
archaeological significance is, therefore, extraordinary.
