1.4 Wood Carving - Soul of Lanna
Wood carving is the work of fine art applied on the
woodworks by carving (in Thai “salak”, “chalak” or “jam lak”) into a shape or
pattern with several tools. It is the intricate work that requires specific
technical skills. Craftsman must have the expertise in transferring the shape
and pattern onto the wooden piece by carving with metal tools. They must
possess both good knowledge and understanding in each pattern in order to
accomplish their work graciously and precisely. At present, this kind of craft
work is called “carving” and the artisan called “carver while the piece of
woodworks called “Kreung Mai Jam Lak” or carving woodworks.
