1.5 “Jong Hang, Jong Dang”
“Jong” is the northern Thai word that means “umbrella” or “Rom” in official Thai language. “Jong Dang” is an umbrella, made of fabric or
cloth at Don Pao Village, Chiang Mai province. It can be referred to as “Rom Mae Wang” (Umbrella from Mae Wang) or “Jong
Hang” (Umbrella made with Hang). The word “Hang” comes from a plant that can be
crushed and mixed in water until the red colour is extracted. After painting on
umbrella, it will become red and is known as “Jong Dang” Red Umbrella). Jong
Dang of Mae Wang is unique by their production style. Different from other
umbrellas equipped only with runner, its stretchers are combined by hand with
nice colourful thread and they are really waterproof and sunproof.
The history of “Jong Hang” making or
“Jong Dang Don Pao” is divided as follows. In the first period 1914 - 1945, Jong Hang was made based on the form of Jong Hang that
was brought to the land by Tai monks who migrated from Mok Mai City in Chiang
Tung State. At that time, nearby village had 2 temples for Tai and Man
(Myanmar) folks which are Jarong Temple (Jam Long Temple) and Man Temple. Tai
folks in Chiang Tung and Sipsongpanna State are people who were regarded as the
source of ancient Lanna civilization, tradition, culture and wisdom. In the
second period 1946 - 1956, apprentices started to learn
widely how to make Jong Hang and other handicrafts. After they left their
monkhood, they brought this craftsmanship with them and produced Jong Hang Don
Pao for sale, especially after harvest time. This period can be considered as
the Golden Age of Jong Hang Don Pao making. In the third period 1957 - 1992, Jong Hang handicraft took a downturn and finally had no
more production due to the changing world and lifestyle.
The production of Jong Dang has been restored since 2544
B.E./2001 A.D. It is led by Pho Aui Pun Srijan in association with Elderly Club
of Don Pao Village. The project budget is supported by Municipality of Tambon
Ban Gad to help preserving and inheriting of local knowledge.
