1.13 Chang Chor - Tung Lanna (Flag
Craftsman)
Tung is made for using in Buddhist
related ceremonies, both in auspicious and inauspicious rituals. There are many
different appearances of Tung in various sizes, shapes and material to match
with belief and ritual as well as tradition of each locality. Lanna Tung is
offered as a sacrifice to the image of Buddha, to the makers themselves and to
the deceased so that they could escape from the sin they may have committed and
then could go to heaven. It is also used as decoration and adornment for
religious constructions and objects as well as in the celebrations e.g. in the
“Poy Luang” ceremony. It is believed that Tung sacrifice will help to eliminate
all evil and freak accidents that may occur as a result of sin or deceiving
spirits. Besides, it is often used in superstitious rites or angel worship as
well as in rituals and ceremonies, for instance, prayer ritual, life prolonging
ritual, “Thang Tham Luang” (Vessantara Jataka preaching ceremony), “Poy Luang”
ceremony and “Thod Kathin ceremony” (ceremony where new robe is offered to
monks). Tung is another meaningful emblem of Lanna heritage that has been
preserved to stay alive for the next generation.
