carving work is the Buddha image in original Chiang Saen art with the warm,
smiling and comforting face. Currently, each manufacturer has developed and
created their own unique piece of work that benefits from the long inherited
wisdom from their predecessors. The Mae Sai community is then able to conserve
their reputation as the leading stone carving restrict of Thailand and build up
the career from stone carving that gives sustainable income to their people in
the foreseeable future.
Amphoe Mae Sai in Chiang Rai province
is a center of biggest stone carving handicraft in the country. The skill has
been passed down from generations to generations. Since the location is next to
Mekong River, it is a good source of 'Mekong stone” that has been washed out by
the stream for a long time until they become shiny, beautiful and colourful
with green, red, black or brown colour.
Mae Sai people have a deep spiritual
bond with Buddhism. Hence, the local artisans in ancient time brought many
Mekong stones to carve for Buddha images with good faith and respect. This
wisdom becomes the culture provided by mother nature and makes Mae Sai the
national well - known district for stone rawing source.
More than thousands of stone carving craftsmen are widespread in Amphoe Mae Sai
and work at home. They start the stone carving training in the local factory
and then become the independent workers after they have enough skills and experiences.
