1.11 Bai Sri Hong Kwan
“Hong Kwan” ceremony can be defined as a ritual
where “Kwan” or spirit is called to come back to its host. It is a combination
between local belief of “Kwan”, Buddhism, Hinduism and superstition. Hong Kwan
ceremony will be conducted when people have a change in their lives, have to go
away from home or have important visitors coming to town as well as in case of
illness and accident Hong Kwan ceremony can be contributed in a series of
rituals, starting from ritual of bad luck elimination first, then life
prolonging ritual and ending with spirit calling ritual. This blessing ceremony
can be held in various occasions such as spirit calling for a child (“Tham
Kwan”), for a “Naga” man (so called “Kwan Look Kaew” chanting for a man in the
Buddhist ordination process before he becomes a monk), for illness people and
for bride and groom, etc.
Nowadays, “Bai Sri Hong Kwan”
ceremony is still practiced in Lanna tradition. It is held to call the spirit
back and bless for happiness, long life, career advancement and victory, as
well as to comfort the mind of its host and get rid of all dangers and bad
luck. Considering the delicate work of Bai Sri creation as well as chanting
with the pleasant and melodious voice, it is a unique ceremony that is truly
worth for conservation and passing on to the next generations.
