1.14 Ban Kuan Pottery Community
Ban Kuan is a handicraft village that
preserves and carries on the ancient style of molding water pot from clay. The
only change is the application of hand - rolling plate
instead of walking around in the shaping process. Their unique decoration is
the twisted pattern on Ban Kuan water pot which is made of porous clay and
baled with low temperature. It makes the filling water cooler and have a good
smeE from the clay.
The group of Ban Kuan Pottery
Community Enterprise of Moo 6, Tambon Harn Kaew, Amphoe Hang Dong in Chiang Mai
province, was established in September 2012 with the support of Abbot Boontor
Upalawan. Ms. Amphai Sudjai offered the house area to be a center for learning
and passing on the local wisdom as well as a showcase for clay pot products.
The villagers try their best to preserve all steps of ancient pottery
techniques. Unlike the other pottery sources, their pottery remains unique and
do not change much along the time.
Their distinctive clay pot products
vary in several shapes and sizes, for instance “Mor Tom” (cooking pot), “Mor
Nueng” (vegetable steamed pot), “Mor Lao Yang” (small pot for making rice
whisky), “Tao Kiang Fai” or “Tao Ang Lo” (clay firepot), “Mor Kra Tang” (big
rice containing pot or water pot for foot washing that is placed in front of
the house), “Mor Oob” (small pot to keep tiny things e.g. burning charcoal,
cooked food, spices, etc.) and “Mor Kram” (indigo pot for boiling natural indigo
colour for cloth dying. It is now widely used as a big curry pot instead).
Furthermore, Ban Kuan als0 offer other main products and best seller items such as
water pot, curry pot, “Mor Nguang” (water boiling pot with kettle shape), “Mor
Torm” (small pot used for boiling water or herbal medicine) and “Tom Yam” pot
