Handicraft of Sri Pan Krua Community
Ban Sri Pan Krua in Amphoe
Muang in Chiang Mai province is the ancient community who produce coiled bamboo
handicraft such as tray, vase, bamboo tray, “Khan Tok” (dinner set tray), “Khan
0” (tray with cover used for carrying food or offerings to monks) and “Khan
Dok” (tray used for worship materials like flowers). In the production, bamboo
is shaped, pattern drawn, then coated with “Rak” natural black lacquer and gold
foil. Finished product is called “Kreung Khern” or lacquerware which is made
with refined skills inherited from generation to generation. Lanna people call
this kind of product as “Kua Hak Kua Hang” based on the materials used Thus,
handicraft “Kua Hak Kua Hang” is the product made of coiled bamboo, then coated
with “Rak” black natural lacquer for waterproof quality and durability. Then,
it will be decorated beautifully by drawing pattern or engraving and filling
with different colours of Rak. If it is made for normal people, only red and
black colour will be applied on “Kua Hak Kua Hang”, not coated with gold foil.
